Harivanshrai Bachchan wanted Amitabh to do some kind of work, but he was interested in acting. However, his elder brother Ajitabh was well aware of the dream of becoming a hero that was growing in his mind. One day when Ajitabh was coming from Mumbai to Delhi, he learned from a boy sitting nearby that Khawaja Abbas was looking for a new face for his film.

Ajitabh immediately took out his brother’s photo from his bag and gave it to the boy and asked him to send this photo to him and also wrote his number to contact him. The next day the picture reached Khwaja Ahmed Abbas and he immediately called to see him. Amitabh was in Delhi at that time, he reached Mumbai as soon as he got the call.

Amitabh- No, people have never taken me in films.

Amitabh took names of many big personalities who rejected him.

Khwaja- What problem did they see in you?

Amitabh- They thought I was too tall for a hero.

Amitabh- Are you taking me to a movie? Are you really taking me to the movies? Without a test?

Khawaja- First you listen to the story and then know the role and fee. If you are ready we will sign the contract.

The story of the film was written by the writer duo of Salim-Javed. At that time Dharmendra liked the script and bought it. At the same time director Prakash Mehra read the script of the film ‘Samadhi’ to Dharmendra. He liked the story so much that he gave the script of ‘Zanjeer’ to Prakash Mehra and took the script of ‘Samadhi’ from him.

Prakash Mehra took up that script, but his hero Dharmendra was already busy with Samadhi. Now he started searching for a new hero. Dev Anand said that the songs in the film were few and Rajkumar refused to do the film citing that he was busy. The search was still going on when one day Pran Nath called Prakash Mehra and asked him to sign Amitabh, seeing him he felt that he would become a star one day.

Prakash was not satisfied with his talk as Amitabh’s last 12 films were flops. However, on Pran’s insistence, he started watching his film ‘Bombay to Goa’. As soon as he saw the film, Prakash Mehra shouted, I have found a hero. 1750 crores on 81year old Amitabh Bachchan
